Beyond Visual: Why We Should Be Using More Haptic Feedback on the Web | Lucas de França

Visual experiences dominate the modern web; more recently, auditory ones have gained ground (although largely unexplored).

However, one sensory dimension remains significantly underutilized: touch. 👈🏻

Although most users access the Internet via mobile devices equipped with vibration motors, few web applications use haptic feedback to enrich the user experience.

The Science of Haptic Feedback 👨🏻‍🔬

Neurologically, touch processing outpaces both sound and sight. Studies show that tactile signals are processed in approximately 95ms, compared to 170ms for visual signals (Ng et al., 2017). When users receive haptic feedback, their response is virtually instantaneous, creating a sense of physical interaction with otherwise abstract digital interfaces.

Research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) demonstrates that multisensory interfaces incorporating haptic feedback produce measurable benefits:

  • User response speed improves by up to 35% in complex tasks (Brewster & Brown, 2004);
  • Memory retention increases by 23% when combined with visual stimuli (Hoggan et al., 2008);
  • Emotional engagement rises by 27% in satisfaction metrics (Lee & Starner, 2010);
  • Perceived quality and responsiveness of interfaces increase by 40% (Seaborn & Antle, 2011).

Haptic feedback provides a crucial additional communication channel for users with visual or hearing impairments. Kane et al. (2013) demonstrated that visually impaired users navigate mobile interfaces 28% faster with haptic feedback incorporated into interactive elements. Similarly, Kuber and Yu (2010) documented that combining haptic feedback with screen readers increases digital content comprehension by 32% for users with disabilities.

Simplifying Implementation: The useVibration Hook ✨

The perceived complexity of implementation has hindered the widespread adoption of haptic feedback. To eliminate this barrier, I created the useVibration hook:

  • Support detection - automatically identifying whether the device supports vibration;
  • Predefined patterns - eliminating the need to create patterns from scratch;
  • Minimalist API - reducing the learning curve for developers;
  • Integrated TypeScript - providing type safety and auto-completion.

Design and Accessibility Considerations 🧩

When implementing haptic feedback, developers should:

  • Be unobtrusive - vibrations should remain subtle to avoid irritating users;
  • Be consistent - the same pattern should always convey the same meaning;
  • Be optional - users should be able to turn off haptic feedback;
  • Use in combination - never rely solely on haptic feedback.

Current Limitations 😓

It's important to acknowledge that vibration support varies across browsers and devices:

  • Safari on iOS does not support the vibration API;
  • Desktop browsers generally lack support;
  • Some Android devices may ignore complex patterns.

However, developers can quickly provide visual or auditory alternatives when needed using the hook's isSupported check.

The Future is Multisensory 📡

Haptic feedback represents a significant opportunity to create more intuitive and accessible interfaces.

Research by Moyes & Jordan (2021) suggests that tactile interfaces will become one of the most significant competitive differentiators for digital experiences by 2026. By implementing thoughtful haptic feedback today, developers can create richer, more engaging, and more accessible web applications.
